California (Maybe) Dreaming

As a kid of 19 in 1986 , i started appraising where I grew up and was living in Upland/Claremont. Was often beginning to do high end and celebrity stuff out here in LA and the OC. Decided I had enough of the heat in the summer of '96 when biz was super slow, my car air conditioner broke and my 1949 house did not have it either, brutalized me....been in West LA area since '97. The weather is awesome here so close to the beach but the traffic, idiots, density homeless and City of LA politics are horrible. No better then the IE. I wish you luck in any move. I am thinking about it as well. Hard to see if appraising will be viable as a career in the next 1-3 years as well and if loan volume recovers a bit the waivers, desktops, PAVE, PAREA, etc etc....will still making appraising a rough go.
Riverside city is a totally awesome environment, but the heat is terrible 8 months of the year.

Adjacent to Mission Boulvard near Campus....where 2-bedroom ghetto units now rent for $2500 at least...where the sound of airplanes is defening...
When I was 19 years old I once lived on Holt Blvd two blocks from Ontario International and that was before dual pane windows. Believe it or not you get used to it and actually enjoy hearing them rumble over head :)

I remember when I was a kid in WV hearing a faraway train rumble by at night. Yea it was a good noise that put me to sleep. I appraised a SFR in Riverside city last week that fronts train tracks. I hope that the underwriter was interested to hear that story, in the report, when I debunked the possible external obs.

Its all baked into the cake and reflected in the sales prices.

Why not take a ride up the (1) towards Portland, Oregon. Someone mentioned Eureka, and I agree. Nice town, ocean breezes, and beautiful beaches and bluffs south of there overlooking the pacific. Very green, as I recall.

Very late to the conversation but I saw this and had to ask, did you graduate from Upland High School?

Places like where I live in Pacifica (SF Bay Area) are very nice and, relatively speaking (compared to the rest of the SF Bay Area) not that expensive. If you are lacking in money then you can ease the burden if you can find someone you can get along with to go in with you to buy a home or condo. You can also rent for $2,600+. Or share. A good room will cost $1,500/month.

There are decent paying jobs here in commercial appraisal, but for the top jobs you need a good skill set, especially going into the future. Also, you have to get though the interviews. The best paying jobs are with the Counties, - or possibly the State of California. Not easy to get though.

As for working overseas. That is not recommended. Travel and moving expenses are pretty high and are expected to just keep going up. Double taxation is a problem for Americans if you want to work overeas. Most of all, it is a hassle. Living conditions are not that great in the cheap places to live - pollution is often a very big problem, especially in Asia.

Of course the USA is getting ever more polluted, especially with drugs such as Oxycodone, Meth, Fentanyl, and THC. No lie. They find them in mussels in the Puget Sound, to the fish in Chesapeake Bay to the the air in LA (THC).

I had a fellow appraiser friend who was bitter with the AMC process with low fees.
Eventually he worked for the county assessor and was very happy with salary and benefits.
Some people prefer working as employees.

So glad I left the state when I did. It has gone to pot (literally and figuratively) since we moved. Don't get me wrong there is a lot I miss as I was born and raised in Cali but holy cow, things have just gotten stupid.

In fact, I'm waiting for the AMC to advise if work is available there.
