Yeah. I very much got that impression. And I guess the discussion of appraisal organizations representing residential appraisers in a way that is responsive to our needs and problems can wait till another day. I know you needed to respond to the guy that besmerched Rich, and so now that is what we are going to do on this one. Rich is great and has my admiration and loyalty-if that helps any.
Try again later Ray. I think it is an important and timely question. The posts above may reveal why the organizations don't-no-can't, help us.

Wow, Edd, not sure how I managed to offend you. If you wish to blame me for stiffling discussion of appraisal organizations, that's fine.

BTW - I'm not an AI member, and don't plan on becoming one.

Additionally,

Bash away at any organization you want. No problem here. B)

OK, please calm down on this!!!!!!!!

No personal slamming.

We all do have a right to our opinions and the right to express them. Just don't make it personal.

ANY organization is NOT beyond being questioned.

I personally believe the NAR Appraisal Section, the AI, NAIFA, and all other appraisal organizations have done very little, at least that any of us can see, to help residential appraiser or residential appraising. Their silence in fighting the lowering of standards, fighting lender pressure, and the lowering of fees has become deafening to me. I would like to know why and feel I and anybody else has the right to question why.

I am saying, either stand up and tell it like it really is in Congress and the media, or tell me why you are not.

Tawfik:

Not until hr 1295 is read-already one strike against them with the self serving section about preference to their members!!! If I were prone to making sweeping generalizations I will predict this before reading hr 1295-It will be heavy on the predatory lending aspects which have nothing to do with appraiser independence on a mere lick and a promise on appraiser independence. If I am wrong I will admit it once I have read the actual language. So I now go about trying to find a copy of the actual bill.

Since most appraisers do not belong to an organization, I really don't think they know what they do or don't do.

I think its kind of hypocritical for one to complain, complain, complain but does no real action about his/her complaint. Sure it's easy to get on this board and SAY the AI or NAIFA, NAR ect do nothing, but its not true. They all do some things, and some are better than others. My opinion the cost of membership is not outrageously high. NAIFA is $350 national + $25 local for a designated member. Merely the cost of 1 + appraisal. In which one benefit you get a discounted education.

What have YOU done to improve the profession? How has your voice been heard?
My opinion, membership to an organization is needed to have your voice be heard. It's strength in numbers. You want change? Then do something about it, get active in the organization.

I would like to see the organizations monitor their memberships better. I personally am embarrassed when a member gets disciplined.

Great points Lee

If AI had done effective marketing back in the late 80's and early nineties I would be a member, period!

When I left the military service I was looking for something to do where I could control some of my time. Real Estate sales caught my eye and so there I set off in 1986 and got my /salesman/broker license. I started to look into appraising and ask all kinds of people on how to start out. I had heard of the infamous MAI and so I ask everyone I could think of what an MAI is or what did it mean.

The answer I got was from a Deer caught in the headlight stare to "Its a jerk of an appraiser" . I ask appraisers that I ran into and got even less info.

Bottom line was simple, no one knew what an MAI was nor did most people in residential real estate give a hoot.

Licensing came along so I got rocking with it and here I am today.

Had I known then what I know now, like I said, I would be a member, period.

The only critiscm I have with AI is simply, they do a **** poor job of promoting themselves to newby appraiser wannabees.

Heres a fair question. Does AI go to college campuses and promote themselves to potential career minded students?

It wont surprise me if the answer is No!

Thats all I have to say.

Well, well, well. It's the semi-monthly bash the AI and NAIFA, what's next, How to Dress on Inspections?

AppraisersForum.com is probably the most effective appraisal association I can think of. It might even be the most cohesive appraiser group out there, too.
