My wife has one of the Olympic Stylus waterproof cameras; th 850 I think. I got to tell you, its a pretty marginal picture taker. Just not enough lens I think. Its probably fine for appraisal work, but if you're taking picture for your personal stuff too its a little disappointing. We use it in the water and pretty much no where else. Battery life is short too.

Yep, big difference between the old 850 and the 1030, 6000 & 8000. The 850 was a lower end "general knockabout" camera. The 1030 and the 6000/8000 have lenses better suited for appraisal work IMHO and the 1030 & 8000 are just built substantially better than either the 850 or the 6000. That said, having used the 1030 and the 8000, I'd say that the Panasonic blows them all away. Of course, it costs more, too, but I enjoy the performance more than saving a hundred bucks. I have only played with (not used extensively, nor do I own) the 6000 but it seems as though it is more like a wide-angle and higher MP version of an 850 while the 8000 is the new version of the 1030. I'd rate the still (barely) available 1030SW a much better buy at (say) $250 than the 850 at (say) $200. Not having used the 6000, I'd still pay the extra $90 to go to the Panasonic TS1. The TS1 and the 8000 are essentially the same price but the Panasonic is simply better, IMHO.

Hope this helps!

I love my Panisonic TZ-5. Does great work for appraisal, and takes fabulous pictures of the kids, dog and what not. Good battery life, good screen. Definately sold on the panisonic products at this point. My wife's already told me she's taking it for her trip this summer. I guess I'll be back to the old 3 mp nikon cool pix for a few weeks.

Metamorphic,

I agree that the TZ5 is a keeper... :-) I do not own one myself, but I do own a TZ50 - essentially a TZ5 with built-in Wi-Fi. I bought it as part of a test for a large customer. In use, I found the camera functions to work just fine and marked a noticeable improvement in the "OOB" (Out of Box) experience from previous generations of Panasonic compact shooters. Prior to the TZ5/TZ50 experience, we favored most Canon cameras for their superior image quality, but starting with the Panasonics in this series, the pictures taken with the Panasonics closely rivaled the Canons. (We're talking just regular work snapshots, not pro or semi-pro camera geeky type stuff.) We've seen the general quality of the Panasonic line improve with each generation. This is no slam on the other competing products and is just an observation shared by most of our user base who chooses to comment on stuff like this.

We're glad to see that some manufacturers are going wider than the 28mm (equiv) as seen on the TZ5 and other similar cameras. The extra width comes in handy for a lot of appraiser type. One tends to notice an extra 10% in width more than an extra 10% in tele. Still, if you have something like a TZ5, it is probably not worth it to upgrade from (say) a TZ5 (9 MP, 28mm - 280mm) to a TZ6 (10 MP, 25mm - 300mm)... Well, not unless your keeps getting "borrowed", LOL. If that is the case and you find the 28mm is wide enough for your daily use, I'd certainly consider the TS1 for yourself so you could have something that is more "rough and ready" for your daily use.

Hope this helps! Sorry for the weird posting hours - it is toward the end of the day here and I am just now getting in to where I have an Internet connection. I should be back in the next week and will be on a more friendly schedule... :-)

FWIW, I have updated the previous PDF by eliminating the Panasonic LX3 and replacing it with the newly announced Casio Exilim EX-H10. While an excellent camera, the LX3 was probably overkill/too expensive for most appraisers so I replaced it with the much smaller and lower priced Casio. I have not even seen this camera myself, much less used it.

Hope this helps!

Ironic.

I just sent my TZ5 in for repair last week. I little fleck of debris turned up in the lenses. When I called customer support that said it was still under warranty, and that the might repair or might replace but they didn't have TZ-5s any more (thinking that far ahead makes me think they're more likely to replace then repair). It would be sweet if they upgraded me to the wi-fi model. [fingers crossed]

Metamorphic,

I'm thinking that if they replace it, they will send you a TZ6 since the TZ50 was pretty rare. Still, it is a worthy replacement... :-) If you like the WiFi thing, you may want to look into the new EyeFi Pro which is working our pretty well for my use - sure beats the older EyeFi cards.

Which ones will let you adjust picture size? I don't need 10-12mb size pictures. I only need 50-100kb for my reports. What about batteries. I hate proprietary type. I like the idea of running into the store and replacing dead batteries. Can you post the same picture at the different focal lengths? What the picture captures at 24mm, what it captures at 25mm, 28mm or 35mm. I’m looking to replace my current duct tape holding the batteries in camera.

I used to think similarly.

What I found is that the cameras that run on AAs have long flash cycle times and short battery lives.

Much better to just get a spare battery and be a little methodical about rotating them and keeping them charged (i bought a camera case that has a storage spot for the spare). Also, if you purchased a 12vold cigarette lighter adapter you could probably stuff the thing in your car and put enough charge on the battery to finish a job and only loose about as much time as a trip to the 7-11 would take.
