China has just won the Trade War

Since the USA ranks last in educational outcomes, eliminating the Department of Education seems like a logical step towards righting that ship. This country can no longer afford to employ people who cannot focus on the fundamentals.
Yes, that way all the children of the land can be taught that Trump actually won the 2020 election.

That is one of the dumbest comments on the topic - fix whatever is lacking in Dept of Education and make it better, dont' destroy it. Clearly, leaving it up to each state is not working.

No worse than teaching girls are boys, boys are girls and men can get pregnant

It is obvious that the DOE is just lacking and has been since its inception. As far as not working at the state level, it depends on the state. If the DOE had even been marginally effective one would think that scores would be going up, not down. Name one thing that the DOE has done to improve education outcomes

It would be nice if you took things seriously, as opposed to clinging to fantasies.

The former Department of Education's weakness was its inability to focus on its stated mission. Most of us realize that standards need to be vigorously enforced and not ignored.

Gutting an agency means there are no more standards or power of that agency to fix anything, letting each state decide, with many of them underfunded,, is not working, since our students are so far behind in education. The erosion of the ideal of a high performing public educion is spread by de funding public ed to fund charter schools - clearly the ain't; doing so well since they have started siphoning $ and resources from public schools the overall result has gone done or stagnated - our nations over priorticzing the military with a trillion budget this year is insane while we defund everying else - a nations strgehnt and security is not only about defense.

How much time are you willing to spend on a failed agency? The Dept. has had decades to institute policies for educational excellence, but failed miserably. It is time for standards, not more bureaucratic bloat for its own sake. And what is it about a $40 trillion debt load you don't understand?

In Ohio the money follows the student. So charter schools get the same per student as the public schools. So I don't see any "defunding" or "siphoning" taking place. The largest and lowest performing public school district in my area (which is also the largest public school district in the state) spends substantially more per student than other higher performing districts in my area. So explain that.

The reason a kid can't read is because they don't read. Not because the schools in their "as is" condition do not deliver the instruction it takes to learn how to read. The most we could say about these schools is they're not prioritizing their time/effort to our preferences. (And that the fkg socialists among the teachers are trying to undermine the family unit and create more trannies so as to advance the revolution).

Our society actively rewards the superficial and actively punishes the development of basic literacy. Kids get hassled by their peers for speaking in complete sentences or having a vocabulary of more than 500 words. Those values start in the home, not in the schools.

No success at the school can compensate for failures in the home. A parent doesn't even need to speak English in order to make their kid do their homework. If they're not doing that then it comes down to not making the effort. Not to being unable to crack the whip or to instill some respect for the role of the school.
