Do you compliment house to homeowner?

I'm usually all business unless the owner starts up a friendly conversation. Years ago I was walking thru a property and homeowner was saying how ugly the walls/flooring were when they purchased and they were in the process of redecorating. I was already to say I guess you'll be repainting this ugly room. Right before I did she said: We just got finished painting this room.

Another time I complimented a woman on the cool looking chess set she had. (former Chess Club Treasurer) Apparently the dick husband overheard our conversation, called the lender, and said I was "casing the joint" to come back and steal the set. Yeah, I was gonna grab my gat and steal the merche along with my partner Blackie.

Gotta watch what you say out there.

I don't let my tenants paint my units. I just had inside painted to neutral colors and potential tenant asked if she could paint another color. No!

You must have said and conveyed a deep love for that chess set. What you said must have gotten the homeowner worried.

Would it surprise anyone here that I have on many occasions complimented the homeowners on their TVs....
Only if it's huge iMAX and expensive.
Usually, it's a guy thing. My wife still gets upset about the TV I put on the wall in the kitchen. Hey TV in open Family Rm too far.

I don't get some appraisers don't talk with homeowner.
I looked at past history and subject was purchased low. I asked and he gave me good explanation.

I talk to them, I don't discuss politics, religion, decor, quality, nor talk about the client, the neighbors, nor their plight. Opening up a real can of worms is a distinct possibility. I recall a woman starting a tirade about an ex more than once....and I didn't initiate that... Let's talk about the dog and when did you last update the roof...

The dogs get in my way when taking photos. Don't know if clients have issue with pets so I tell owner get dog out of the living room as well as cats on bed.

let's not ever talk to the homeowners. maybe they will then think we might have a racial dislike of their beautiful home. i enjoy talking to homeowner's, especially if they have a dog. if you think there is going to be a value issue on a refi, don't talk and get the pre warned answers to the question that you are going to get comp stiped on. but's that's my business decision.
according to some of yous, we can't talk to the home owner and still be the adult? i have had enough home owner's tell me about the non talking appraiser, so it must not be that important for your business image, or the client's who hired you. oh, by the way i am also friendly with a lot of lender people, just from being around so long. that business decision has keep me free from AMC work most of my long, long, appraising life.
Ditto to that - there is nothing wrong with making casual conversation with homeowners as we are looking in the closets, etc. I try to make them feel at ease with us poking around. I can not say how many kitchen/bath pics I forgot to take as I was distracted by a cute dog! Lol!!

It's harder for me to do multitasking talking with homeowner and looking at the house.
When someone's in the kitchen cooking, I say to myself I'll come back later when they leave kitchen.
Before I remembered but now I tend to forget to take it.
Best policy is to ask person to move and take photo before I forget.
