Early 1980's: Yes, those were the good old days. Appraisals came in the mail in large manilla folders, and when completed were sent back to HUD for review. If the LO called you, you had to say "I am not allowed to discuss the appraisal with you, call HUD." Assigned on a rotating basis, no pressure. And we had to draw the interior floor plans, including doors/swings and windows, setbacks, north arrows.....
Then came DIRECT ENDORSEMENT and then LENDER SELECTION. The beginning of
the end....anyone remember?
One of the first ones I did under the new program was for Director's Mortgage, which became Norwest and then Countrywide. The LO called me and said "change your FAIR rating to AVERAGE. I asked what they had done to the property, he said "Young lady,
you don't work for FHA any more, you work for ME now and you will DO AS YOU'RE
TOLD!!" I told him *&&^^%$$$#@ and I never got another one, and still can't work
for Countrywide (unless it is a VA and they don't have a choice as to who they get as an appraiser)
