No he was not right. You just don't know what you're missing. However, even if you insist on using a tape you should investigate a 'new' thing called ebay to unload that Disto for some cash.I purchased a Disto Laser in Oct 2006 and also purchased a cd to "learn the basics"; however, my mentor, who has been appraiser for over 50 years taught me to use nothing but a tape to measure a house with. Years after he retired, the box arrived with the disto laser, glasses, holster, etc; needless, to say, I have never taken the disto laser out of the box (even with the cd)....I still use a fiberglass tape measuring in decimals...my mentor was right after all.
You do make a very good point for any trainee; don't buy anything for appraising without consulting your supervisor.
