Am I the only one who gets confused when appraisers talk about requiring existing homes be compliant to building code? It’s my understanding these building code requirements basically only apply to new constructions or when there’s a change in use. Aren’t existing structures grandfathered in? Are you applying all of the current version of the building code (IRC) to this 1940-50s ranch home, such as those for building materials, fire protection, interior finishes, etc.?
