Taking On A Trainee. 10 - 15 Per Hour

I'd run 2 businesses

$20K for real world course work and book course work. Trainee College @ Runtzel

I'd then hire them and pay off commission. 25% of every report.

2 separate things. Just like a college teaching and hiring a student in the campus store.

Now......that's thinking outside the box!
 
Here's an obvious question. Are there any actual appraisal schools anywhere that anyone has ever heard of? I'm not talking about course work, such as online schools for classes. Rather.....actual appraisal schools to get the 2,000 or 2,500 hours of hands on experience.
 
None that I've heard of; the concept of earning experience hours in a course is the "practicum" concept. While there is a method for such courses to be developed and approved by the AQB, I haven't heard of anyone actually doing it.

As it stand now, some states require work-experience to be related to an actual business-assignment (you cannot appraise your relative's homes for training purposes and get experience). But that would change if the AQB had an approved practicum course.

Had to look that term up. I have spent (and continue to) spend time in England each year. But never heard the term before.
A practicum (also called work placement, especially in the UK) is a graduate level course, often in a specialized field of study, that is designed to give students supervised practical application of a previously or concurrently studied theory. Practicums (student teaching) are common for education and social work majors. In some cases, the practicum may be a part-time student teaching placement that occurs the semester before a student's full-time student teaching placement.

The process resembles an internship; however, the latter is often not part of the school program.
 
In NC a trainee can not pay a supervisor. Obvious conflict of interest.
I'm not going to take the time to look it up right now (since I'm not looking for a trainee at the moment) but I'm 99% sure FL has a similar conflict of interest situation. I believe it's that a trainee cannot own the company that their supervisor works for - conflict of interest
 
About 3 months ago I took on my first trainee. First and probably last. After about 2 months they went to work full time with another appraiser long before I was ever able to recoup any of the money/time spent helping to train that person.
That's you own fault for not making the trainee sign a non-compete agreement.

Sorry but that makes no sense what-so-ever. The person is a trainee with a trainee license. They are definitely not competing with my office.

Okay...the lack of a non-compete has resulted in you providing three months of free training to this guy that he is now using to assist another appraiser. That would have never happened to me as I would have made him sign a non-compete agreement with a liquidated damages clause and I would be collecting on that liquidated damages clause if he bolted and went to work for someone else. I also would have immediately sent a cease and desist to the other appraiser and sued him too if he insisted on continuing to employ my former trainee after knowing that the trainee was in violation of the non-compete agreement.

Do yourself a favor before taking on a trainee again....go talk to an attorney first and protect yourself from this happening again.

Simply no more trainee's for me. Another reason is my base of operation is 60 miles from the nearest city......up in the mountains. My choice. I'm just not set up to train. I did a friend a favor, gave it a shot and it wasn't for me. Thanks for the ideas.
