Here is the scientific brief on the CDC site if you are interested in the science behind it. It references some of the studies that have been done.
Most of the studies rely on people saying they wear masks. Who really knows if they did. As far as the study on the Roosevelt. Those sailors did not have a choice. I am sure they were under orders and were not wearing gaiters or the like. So compliance was not a problem. In real life. The type of mask, how it is worn and when it is worn all make a difference. Remember when the mask frenzy first started. They were promoting making your own mask our of an old tee shirt or the like. For the most part. They were useless. Hard to do a real scientific study. How do you have a control group or a true comparison. Not like you can put 50 people in in one room with masks and 50 people in another room without masks and then expose both rooms to a pathogen

You have a lot of questions, a lot of these same questions are addressed in the various studies. There are difficulties, but masks work and there is plenty of data that proves it. There may no be scientific consensus like with climate change, but that is because covid-19 is still so new.

My niece's husband got one five days ago. So far there no signs of autism. He is an emergency room physician, that's why he was in the front of the line.

She wears a mask, glasses, and a face shield. Stop making stuff up.
So I confirmed with the wife tonight on the mask, shield etc. stuff. When she goes down to the ER for a simple consult she wears a mask and sometimes a face shield. The ER nurses all have masks and they are strongly encouraged to wear the face shield but many don't. When she goes down to a trauma in the ER N-95's are required in the trauma bays.

When she goes to her "floor" patients she wears a mask but not a face shield unless she goes into the patient rooms which is not often. The RNs sometimes have shields and sometimes don't.

When she goes to her ICU where people are sicker (often on vents) she wears a mask and the RNs wear masks, some of them wear face shields. The ICU people are all tested for Covid before they are allowed in the ICU.

If you are in a car crash and test negative you go to my wife's ICU. If you are in a car crash and test positive then you go to a Covid ICU unit where everyone wears space suits.

They only wear N95 when patient is positive. Procedure mask otherwise.
At my wife's hospital N-95 when in trauma bay. If they test positive they go to a special Covid unit and the nurses there wear the space helmet thing of an N-95. They are very strict about who takes care of those people. My wife's boss will not allow her to go in those units because she is 54. The other NP is 32 and will go to Covidland if she has to. He also restricted a couple older doctors from going into those units.
