Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

Great info. Thanks for clearing that up. So, I don't know that a pen is a must, and not sure the drawing detail really matters, specifically based on the software that I use, Apex being one of the major ones. it seems to me that you could draw with as much as a crude device that is constructed and still get good lines based on the software. I have never been able to test my theory, but I am under the opinion that I may not need pen at all if the screen is large enough to use just touch. This may be a stretch, as the software screens are fairly small on my 12 inch device. Not sure if a 14 of 15 will solve the size issue or not. I am in a an area outside of any major towns, and do not have access to any type of real device unless I drive an hour+/-, and even then the units available at Best Buy are minimal. The business devices definitely lack the luster of the consumer side, however, the build quality of the older units I have had has been great, so no reason to change it up based on price alone. The HP x360 has some great features, but I notice that it is lacking in the accessory department, case, dock, etc, I assume that we will see some of these items with business class stuff coming forward, as the release dates and any kind of optimization/customization is not even available as of yet. Its nice to see some new units hit the market, but frustrating to have to wait so long for anything to actually be available. Chris Wagoner

Minor update/notice...

I was pleasantly surprised by the recent upgrade to the Dell 8" tablet. Hence, I ordered a couple for testing. The earlier models were one of my favorite 8" devices but early models suffered from a poor implementation of active pen technology. The new model(s)* use more appropriate/robust Wacom tech, so I have high hopes for this little bugger. They basically range from $299 - $399 in base configuration. Actually, they show a retail of $499 - $641, but as usual, they are marked down and show as ranging from $349 - $449. They default to use Windows 10 Pro 64 bit but if you hit the [Customize & Buy] button, however, you can specify Windows 10 Home 64 bit which is perfectly fine for most appraisers' use (some Enterprise users require Pro, but most you do not), the price is $50 less :) For most users, I feel that the $449/$399 model is the way to go because it comes with 4GB of RAM. I tried to order a $299 model (I like to test on the lowest end model) but I could not get the active pen option to show up, so I ended up getting a couple of the upper end models. I'm not recommending this unit, per se, right now - I need to put it through its paces, etc., but based on my previous experiences (and those of other users), given the upgrades they made (primarily the pen and increased RAM), this may be a unit to look into if you find that an 8" device fits your needs. IF so, I highly recommend getting the Accidental Drop protection option - currently running $49 for the 1st year - and the optional pen (currently $44.99) which is listed as an accessory on the second page. One weird little thing when I ordered was that the shipping and handling was showing up as $159 for two devices until I went to the check out page and was able to specify that I did not need overnight delivery and it dropped to $6 (which was also negated on the final payment page.)

In addition to using USB-type C (3.0), these devices show to have a SIM slot and the specs call for a "built-in Qualcomm® Gobi™ 4G LTE mobile broadband card" but it is unclear whether or not it is present in these models or simply not activated. I know some of you really want 4G LTE availability and it is important to many of my users in other industries, so I'll be keeping my eye on this (and commenting as appropriate) going forward.

Here is a link to the main page where you can review specs, look at more pictures, etc.: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/dell-venue-8-pro-5855-tablet/pd?ref=PD_Family Note that, other than the active pen, I did not order any of the accessories shown. I will likely order a dock and/or something else, as appropriate, in the near future and will report on those then.

Hope this helps!

Also, I noted that MS is offering $150 off the Surface 3 ("S3") 128 GB models for today and tomorrow only. This discount actually makes the 128 GB model cost $50 less than the 64 GB model! The discount applies to both the Wi-Fi model and the 4G LTE model. So, they are running $449 and $549, respectively. The 128 GB models also come with 4 GB of RAM whereas the 64 GB models only have 2 GB of RAM. So, no matter how you look at it, the 4GB/128GB models are simply the better buy.

In a convenient move, MS will prompt you to see if you want the (recommended!) MS Complete Accident Protection added for $99 :-) I have had great feedback from field users on the UAG case and FWIW, I am testing a competitor to that for the Surface Pro line. I'll let those interested in this aspect know how it works out and about S3 availability.

Hope this helps!

Randall, I wish the Ipad was still supported since I have no Windows tablets (I Hate Windows). Would the Dell Venue Pro 7000 series work well with Apex? I can get a decent deal on one with 4Gig and 128 SSD

Hi Leon,

The old iPad app is waaay to old and clunky and needs to be completely replaced (vs. patched) IMHO but I'm not sure if there is enough interest to make it economically viable. IF I do it for iOS, it'll be a completely different program - perhaps brought over from a program for non-fee appraisers, or just new from scratch.

Can you send me a link to the actual device you are asking about? over the years Dell has marketed a few devices under the 7000 series moniker and I'd like to make sure we're discussing the same device so I can give you the best feedback.

Hi Leon,

Yes, that would definitely work. If you are planning on using it for just (or even mainly) sketching, it could be overkill, though. So, unless you are opposed to saving a few bucks, you might find a better bang for the buck. I asked Brian to reach out to you, so if you have a minute to visit with him on what all you are trying to accomplish (light, medium, heavy use, etc.) the more we learn about your needs and expectations, the better suggestions I can make. Do you mind if he calls you?

Wow,
Thanks. I would only be using it for Apex. So if this is overkill what would be a decent one that's at least a 10 inch screen?

This Dell that I mentioned is used from a friend of mine for 350 bucks but seems like a pretty good deal

Hi Leon,

Again, sorry for the delay in replying. The Dell is a fine unit. I prefer others that are either lighter or more powerful, but for ~$350 (assuming it is in good condition, etc.), that is hard to beat. I'm not a big fan of the pen on the older units, but they mostly work OK, especially if you get one of the latter versions. If you are coming from an iPad, you're not picky on pen stuff anyway, but I'd still like to see you be able to use it if you like it.

Thanks.
Yea, if I don't have to use a pen I would rather not.
Thank you for the help!
