Irma Doesn't Look Good

Rented a car. Going to keep an eye on the track through tonight and make a decision probably tomorrow morning as to evac or not. Wife and I are leaning toward "better safe than sorry" and heading northwest - possibly Alabama or TN. Not sure yet.

Yea, UC, I'm still here. And even if/when we do evac, I have a laptop! lol

Not leaving today. Watching the forecast(s) closely and considering it still for tomorrow. Tom brought up a good point, though, it's a big @$$ storm and FL isn't that wide.

Again, my house is not on the water and we are on one of the highest points in the city/county.

We picked up the rental, stopped at the grocery store and gas station ... if we do end up staying, we have provisions. And leaving is still a viable option

Not sure what I would do, leave or hunker down. Caribbean island friends say only tourists evacuate and they are used to surviving the hurricanes. I did experience a cat 4 or 5 hurricane in Cuba back in the early 2000's in a Havana hotel. All of the windows were taped up and the guests moved to a large meeting room. Will never forget the image of palm trees flexing parallel to the ground. Good luck Brian and family.

Being backed up on the interstate would scare me at the last minute. Make sure you have plenty of bottled water and some food if you leave at the last minute.

Exactly. There are not many alternate routes out of that skinny state.

You will never regret leaving. You might forever regret staying.

You might want a few cans of gas in your trunk too. Many people died in Texas due to traffic jams years ago. That's why the govt in TX didn't order an evacuation this time.

If you stay,

take one down spount off your gutter, or cut it to run into an outside garbage can you tie in place.

One large (read 55 gallon garbage can) full of water will flush your toliet for more than a week without utilities.

Also, fill as many ziplock bags as you can find full of water, make sure to sqeeze the air out of them. Put them all in the freezer. When they freeze, they should take up all the air space in your freezer and keep your frozen foods good and cold for more than a few days. You want that freezer full, full, full of those bags. You can move one into the refridgerator portion every day or so, and as they melt, you'll have fresh water to brush your teeth and wash your face without using up your stored bottle water.

There are like a couple more behind Irma now.

They are tracking Irma a little further east but it could hit Miami dead on.
