I've been bitten three times during my appraising career. I won't even go in the front door unless any dog(s) have been locked up. If you bring your dog with you when apraising my house, you will not be let in. I don't want your dog in my yard or in my house or sitting in a car by the sidewalk barking at the people going by.
I know your dog wouldn't do that, it has to be somebody else's dog. right....

Folks let face it, not everybody likes dogs. If you're going to appraise somebodies house, have respect for the owner and leave the dogs and kids at home.
and dress like you're a professional.

In the summer I wear a "Protect your nuts" (with a picture of a squirrel) Tee shirt, a banana hammock about 3 sizes too small, and flip flops with dog sheet on the heels if I wear shoes at all. Of course some folks have no couth, and you must wear flip flops, lest ye stain your bare heels with Fido poop scattered about the yard. Some of you sumbeeches need to loosen your ties, it seems to be tightening your pucker point.

Unless you are a blind appraiser with a cane, I see no reason to take your dog on an inspection. Wouldn't you think it might bother some borrowers that your brought your dog, your wife or both?

Well, being a small person, there are times when I've taken my husband for safety reasons. I don't ever take Hamlet, because I wouldn't want him to get hurt, and he isn't any real protection anyway. I have to agree that it isn't really professional or polite to impose our pets on others.

I'm the most starched collar guy you'd ever want to meet. :rof:

I'm a people person too and I'm definately not a dog person. Having a dog doesn't make someone human or more "country" than someone else. I've had several dogs (we only have 2 now). All of them have liked to ride in the truck. I never took them anywhere that I didn't have prior permission from the property owner.

Some people have dogs that don't get along with other dogs. Do you want a Rottweiler jumping on your car to get at your Golden? Why should the property owner lock his dog up? It's not the Rott's fault. The Golden is in his turf.

I like ya Don, we just disagree. A dog on an inspection is just not professional.

Joker .. you keep wearing those stiff collars and you are going to give the rest of us a bad name. I mean dont take your dog or ewe with you if you dont want to ... but dude unbutton the collar, loosen the tie, and let the homeowner feel like they have something in common with you.
If all your clients are Fortune 500s ... cool for you ... if not .. you gotta loosen up some ... hell they are gonna think you are an IRS guy and that rotty will be lookin for some of your butt to grab.

And I guarantee you show up in that garb to appraise my house .. Im gonna make you take your shoes off at the door. Just cause I can ... that and I wanna see if the stiff collar dude has holes in his socks.
:peace:

Most homes I appraise are the biggest investment that the homeowner makes. Seems to me that showing up in sandals, jeans, t-shirt is a slap in the face. But that's just me.

I think it is always best to try to dress for the homeowner if you can. I can see where dressing in a stuffy manner would off put and make some nervous. While I don't want to be real friendly and get too personal, if I can make the homeowner relax, they might be willing to fill out my questionaire and let me do my job. On the other hand, I believe those that are talking about wife beater tee and such are probably joking... I mean those that wear wife beaters probably are doing comp checks are drive bys and aren't even going inside. That'd mean you'd have to put down your beer.

The only time I take a dog with me is when he's no longer a puppy or cute, and it's time to take him for a ride way out in the country. If you take three right turns followed by a left, they will not find their way back to your house. That's experience there folks, and free advice.

I am fairly sure you're joking, but for those who the above applies to, I am certain there is a special place waiting for you, and bring your shorts cause it's gonna be hot.
