Gordon I don’t think it’s a country/city thing. I grew up in a community with fewer than 300 people and cannot imagine taking a dog along on an appraisal inspection. I thought this was a joke for the first several pages. I suppose showing up with Fido must be a big PR push for some.

Its not for PR, its to keep the chit chat to a minimum. When they open the door and I let the dogs in and say "We're here to appraise your house" they are usually quiet and stand very still. Cuts my inspection time way down. Unless they have cats with a good hiding place. Then it takes a little longer to round up my assistants.

Jeez, Joyce, it's not like I let them know. I park down the street in the shade. Other than being covered with fur, which happens whether I leave the dog at home or not, there's no evidence. :)

I wouldn't leave my daughter at home by herself all day ... so why should I leave Jasper??

That best sums up my thoguhts on why we take the dogs along. A dog does not see us and then choose to come home with us. It is a choice we make, and our only duty to that dog is to make sure it lives the best life possible.

Ever notice what people who have destructive dogs have in common? No exercise (mental or physical) and then home alone for long periods of time. I'm not surprised that when we leave our dog home for a few hours to go out to eat or shopping (too long to leave in the truck), we don't have any problems. We make sure Molly is worked out before we go.

A funny thing happened at an inspection a couple weeks ago. We were at a house in the woods, and Molly really wanted to get out and play. I had to raise my voice and tell her to stay in the truck. The homeowner heard me, and came out to see what was going on. She thought I was yelling at a person in the truck. We only let the dogs out at rural properties if vacant or vacant land.

I decided to cast my vote for No, not at all. I’m surprised and disappointed there are 157 responses so far which is more than a poll over a serious USPAP issue would get. That is sad, but also a reflection of the times and our peers. Don’t be mistaken, I’m fond of my Labrador retriever, but he isn’t a pet, he’s a work dog. Most pet problems begin when people treat dogs like folks. If mine performs well in the field or the duck blind, he is rewarded. I like my Labrador retriever, but I don’t love him. Why not? Because he’s a damned dog, that’s why.

I have a camper top on my truck ... and dual 12 volt oscillating fans over the screen windows ... Jasper is a chocolate lab and is also a working dog ... but he is also a part of the family ... he performs, and obeys his commands based on his love for me ... not because I beat him into submission ... and certainly not because I ignore him except when he is working. I live alone and only get to see my daughter every other weekend ... so Jasper is my only family within 250 miles ... It isn't a status symbol or a conversation starter .. or even something "just to be different" ... I talk to him ... he sleeps by my bed ... and he stays at my feet while I work ... Everyone one who has ever met him just can't believe how smart he is and how well he works his commands. I can sit him .. tell him to stay ... throw any target I want and he won't move until I give him the release command, which for him is "Go!" ... if he can't find the target, he stops and looks at me, and I give him directions by hand signal or voice command and he will find it everytime. He trusts me ... and I trust him ... we are partners ... hence his AKC/CKC name: "Jasper's Partner in Crime" ... 140lbs of pure muscle ... not an ounce of fat on him ... and we are still hoping to do "DockDog/Splashdog" this summer ... Yes he is a dog ... yes he is working dog ... yes I love him ... yes he is my friend ... yes, he will lay in the back of the truck, under his fans, for hours on end, without making a sound or tearing anything up ... What's wrong with having a dog for a friend ... or for loving one?

I have been married 3 times, but I have never had to worry about coming home and finding Jasper in the bed with someone else ... or having my bank account cleaned out and my home taken away ... Jasper just wants to eat, sleep and do whatever I want to do ... he likes to be a part of things ... and I have no problem with that ... :)

You can't beat unconditional love. :new_smile-l:

I think it has more to do with the general attitude towards dogs in any given area. As RH said, his dog is a hunting/working dog and isn't treated as a "family" member and this is probably the consensus of most of the area he works.

My neck of the woods, people take their dogs everywhere. Every car has dog hair on the seats and nose prints on the windows. There are even businesses that put "dogs welcome" on their front doors in downtown because they knew they were alienating a big portion of the people walking by. Restaurants and coffee shops put in outdoor seating and special sections for dog owners with places to tie up close by. Even the big corps are getting in on it. Home Depot has let dogs in for years.

My dog comes with me in Vermont, but never did in Virginia.

So that's why ....

Everytime I go into HD, I see people with dogs ... usually small dogs ... that they can hold in their arms ...

Jasper has to stay home for the next few days .... what started as Kennel Cough, has now grown into a full blown URI .... fever of 104° .... the boy is sleeping a lot and just generally not feeling good ... Vet gave him Cipro twice a day for 10 days ... and a bunch of shots ... hopefully it will smooth him out pretty quickly ... but when he gets to coughing, it's bad ... so bad that I half expect to see a lung on the floor .... :(
