Walked away mid-inspection/vent

Right on. I've never understood the whole baby nap thing but have had to schedule many appointments around them. Attached what I consider my gem. Keeps me thorough and consistent.

That's real similar to mine

I've had people ask me to do the inside first and I would not, unless is a really simple floor plan. On a complex floor plan, how do you know where the rooms go? if there are any hidden rooms? etc? I usually just explain it and that's that.

You did the right thing. Its your appraisal and you choose how your going to do it. When you deviate from your protocol, that's when you start making mistakes. Besides if HO were obnoxious now, imagine what the HO would be like if you return a value they don't agree with.

Exactly and why I had to walk. It would have been a mess. Besides now I may have a half day off Sunday with a somewhat lighter week.

I appraise many short sale properties. Perhaps the home owners are facing a divorce or a job loss. Maybe the baby is colicky (been there) and the parents are working around a different schedule than the one they envisioned when they made the appointment with you. I can only imagine the pressure the home owners are under in these situations and try to be as compassionate as possible. If I had a strict way to inspect the home, as you appear to have, I would have simply asked if I could reschedule a time that was better for them and the baby and would allow me to inspect it my way.

Its the homeowners fault. They scheduled the inspection with you for a specific time. If they knew that they had to put a baby down 10 minutes after 1, well then that wasn't too bright of them. Having said that, I really don't think that asking if you could do the interior first is that big of a deal. You may need to consider being a little more flexible with your inspection routine to help accomodate sticky situations. Personally, I would be a little concerned if an appraiser absolutely refused to inspect the interior first if asked.

MRB,
I usually do the interior first (shoes are clean and I haven't just gotten rained on, and if its really rainy I can measure a house from the inside), but anyway, but if someone said would you do the outside first, it wouldn't be a big deal, I'd say, sure, no problem. So I'm with those that side with the reasonable request of the HO.

Having said that, I did have one where I was on the clock and had to do an inspection and leave to retrieve my daughter from the orthodonist. The HO wanted to show me a 40 page photo book of all the work she had done. I told her I recall the house when she bought it and I could see how it looked now. She booted me because I wouldn't sit down and look at her photo album. Consider your experience as a lesson learned that the customer is always right when your on their turf.

I think MRB made the right decision. It makes no difference whether one measures the exterior first or not, it's the appraiser's decision solely and not one for the borrower, especially when the borrower is obnoxious and demanding like this one was. When a borrower begins controlling the process, where does it end? Determining when a borrower crosses the line of being too obnoxious to deal with is one bit of independence left in this field which should be cherished. I use this option every 5 years or so and it's quite gratifying when the one on the receiving end is used to getting their way. :D

Some of those saying the borrower should have been obeyed strike me as the type who would have cleaned the gutters and weeded the garden if the borrower had demanded it. Maybe it's a carryover of being conditioned by mortgage brokers to serve the borrower and not the lender, some habits are hard to break.

I would have accomodated the home owner. I understand routines I am same way, but I won't miss rooms or some how not be able to draw the house if I saw the inside first.
If they were A holes and you walked that is one thing but if they just asked and you gave them the "no this is the way I do it", I dont' get it. TJ is right, last time you would work for us.
